Type species Megistostoma striata Gabb, 1864, has been treated as a junior secondary homonym of Bullaea striata Deshayes, 1824, and renamed Bullaea gabbiana by Stoliczka (1868) [note that Stoliczka misspelt the genus as Megistoma]. Cossmann (1895, Essais de paléoconchologie comparée, 1: 127) independently introduced Philine gabbi as new name, which is a junior objective synonym of Megistostoma gabbiana (Stoliczka, 1868). [details]
