Taxonomy Remarkably, Carter (1886a) first described Aphroceras ramosa as a new species from the Liverpool area (UK) and in the discussion of this declared this new species to be a member of Heteropia, still to be properly described in a forthcoming Australian paper (Carter, 1886c). Since Aphroceras ramosa is the only species mentioned in the Liverpool paper and Heteropia is first used there, A. ramosa automatically becomes the type species, even though Carter did not mention the species ramosa in the 1886c paper.
