In the course of a detailed systematic investigation, Hydromedusae were collected from the Northern Part of the South China Sea during February 1978-January 1979, of which 5 specimens were proved to be a new species. A new family and genus has been erected for the species, which belongs to Anthomedusae. The diagnoses for the new family, genus and species are as follows.Platystomidae fam. nov.Anthomedusae without exumbrellar nematocyst tracks;with cross-shaped mouth with four lips, without oral tentacles or oral arms; stomach four-sided, very flat; gonads surrounding stomach wall; with four or eight radial canals; with four or eight groups of marginal tentacles; with or without ocelli.Platystoma gen. nov.Platystomidae without exumbrellar nematocyst tracks; with cruciform mouth with four lips, no oral tentacles or oral arms; stomach flat and four-sided; gonads surrounding stomach; four radial canals; four groups of marginal tentacles; with ocslli.Type species: Platystoma nanhainense gen. n., sp. n.Plat ystoma nanhainensggen. nov.,sp. nov. (fig. 1)Umbrella dome-like, 2.5-3.5mm high, 2.0-2.5mm wide. Exumbrella smooth, no nematocyst tracks; Cruciform mouth,.with four lips,, no oral tentacles or oral arms; Stomach four-sided,very flat, mounted upon a short,; cone-shaped peduncle; With four simple narrow radial canals and′a ring canal. Gonads surro-unding stomach wall, from near cruciform mouth. Four perradial groups of marginal tentacles, marginal bulbs kidney-shaped, each with 5-6 hollow tentacles, all with a dark-brown adaxial ocellus on the tentacle bases, the tentacles with rings of nematocysts.Velum narrow.Holotype No. TIO-HC 071, Northern South China Sea (21°N, 113° E), 1978. It contains up to the present has 22 families. This new family closely resembles Bougainvilliidae, Rathkeidae, Russellidae and Halime-dusidae. A comparison of the four families with our new family is given in the following table:When Uchida described the genus Octorathkea in 1927, he placed it in the. family Bougainvilliidae, later Kramp (1961,1968) revised it to family Rathkeidae. Owing to the fact that genus Octorathkea is without oral tentacle; or oral arms, thus asserting that it should not belong to the Bougainvilliidae or Rathkeidae. According to the morphology of stomach, mouth and lips of the genus Octorathkea,it shouldbe placed under a new family——Platystomidae. Therefore, the family Platystomi-dae enumerted up to the present two genera——Platystoma gen. nov. and Octorath- kea Uchida. Their distinguishing characters are: Octorathkea Uchida with 8 radial canalsand 8 groups of marginal tentacles and Platystoma gen. nov. with 4 radial canals and 4 groups of marginal tentacles.
