The morphology of the dinoflagellate genus Lissodinium Matz., emend. Carbonell-Moore was studied from cells collected in different parts of the worlD'S oceans. The type species, Lissodinium schilleri, is redefined and seventeen new species are described. No variation in the plate tabulation pattern was found. The apical pore complex consists of three platelets: a pore plate, a cover plate and a canal plate. The genus Lissodinium may also present an antapical spine. This feature was found in two of the new species. The differences between the species are based on cell size and shape, plate size and shape, presence or absence of spines, and on the kind of thecal pores. Two taxonomical sections are created to group the species according to the shape of the 1“” plate, which can be either rhomboidal with anterior sides longer than the posterior sides, or elongated with a curved anterior side, two long and almost parallel sides and two shorter sides, converging posteriorly. Cell size ranges widely from 30µ m up to 132 µm in length along the apical-antapical axis and from 33 µm to 128 µm along the dorso-ventral axis. The genus Lissodinium appears to have a deep vertical distribution, with the maximum species diversity found in Equatorial Pacific samples between 150 m and 200 m. The latitudinal distribution of the species shows that Lissodinium is widely distributed in oceanic tropical and subtropical waters. A key to the species is given.
