Protoheterophyes spuriocirrus gen. et sp. nov. (Trematoda, Heterophyidae) from terns and a gull collected in tropical Queensland differs from other heterophyines in having a dextral genital pore and an eversible genital sinus that opens simply into the genital sac. The confused and confusing term gonotyl is examined and dissected into three distinct and non-homologous anatomies. It is proposed that the term gonotyl be restricted to a single anatomy, defined as an unbounded, anucleate, typically muscular outgrowth of the wall of the ventrogenital sac, which may bear the genital pore, and which is unarmed in all but one of the genera.
