Description Found on the continental and insular shelves from the intertidal down to at least 70 m. Occurs more commonly in lagoons, along coral and rocky reefs, sandy areas near reefs and beaches. Feeds on corals, crabs, lobsters, octopi, squids, sea urchins, and reef fishes (surgeonfishes and siganids). Nocturnal. Forms schools. Ovoviviparous with 4 young/uterus. Tough and hardy, and survives in captivity. Caught by anglers (Ref. 391). Marketed fresh and dried-salted; used in the sharkfin trade; liver processed for vitamins and oil; offal processed for fishmeal. Few provoked attacks. [details]
