Description Distribution: Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific. Body extremely elongate and strongly compressed. Maxilla hidden by preorbitals. Jaws usually with fanglike teeth. Dorsal fin very long (extending over length of body); the soft-rayed part usually longer than the spinous part and the parts demarcated by a notch in some species. Caudal fin small, if present. Pectoral fin inserted low on body. Pelvic fin, if present, reduced to 1 scalelike spine and a vestigial soft ray. With 58-192 vertebrae (34-53 + 24-151). [details]
