Synonymy David & Laurin (1996, p. 357-358), based on an analysis of 18 morphological characters of the corona, proposed to synonymize Echinocardium mortenseni and E. lymani species with E. capense. Mironov (2006, p. 123-125), however, convincingly argues that pedicellarial characers and labrum shape of these species do differ from E. capense and that more information on pedicellarial variability is needed to accept or reject the synonymization of these species.
