Etymology from "virgulatus" [lat.], banded [details]
Spelling sometimes incorrectly spelled "Salmacis virgulatus"; since Salmacis is of feminine gender and the specific name an adjective, however, this species must be spelled Salmacis virgulata [details]Unreviewed
Authority L. Agassiz as author in Lambert (1923) and Clark & Rowe (1971). [details]
Distribution Also distributed in Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, Philippine, China and south Japan (Clark & Rowe, 1971).
According to Rowe & Gates (1995), there is some confusion between the identification of Salmacis virgulata, Salmacis sphaeroides (Linnaeus, 1758) and Temnopleurus alexandri (Bell, 1884), so Salmacis virgulata has been mistakenly recorded from Australia. [details]
