Diagnosis Comatulida with centrodorsal low hemispherical to discoidal. No aboral star. Cirrus sockets without distinct ornament or with slightly elevated rim around lumen; crowded in 1-3 irregular marginal tiers. Adoral surface of centrodorsal and aboral surface of radials with shallow, radial, coelomic depressions or radiating furrows. Centrodorsal cavity less than 30% of centrodorsal diameter. Cirrals aborally rounded or carinate, sometimes with aboral spines. Basal rosette; no rod-shaped basals except in some fossils. Radial articular usually flat; interarticular ligament fossae high and broad. Adoral muscle fossae usually small, narrow, crescentic bands. Radial cavity moderate to large with spongy calcareous plug. Flat synarthry between first pair of brachitaxis ossicles and first free brachials, except for syzygy between primibrachials in Zygometridae. Syzygy at 3+4; distal syzygial interval usually large. Oral pinnules sometimes carinate. Ambulacral covering plates inconspicuous or absent. Mouth central (modified from Hess & Messing 2011). [details]
Taxonomic remark Because Himerometridae AH Clark, 1908, was described before Mariametridae AH Clark, 1909, and both are placed within the same superfamily, Himerometroidea supercedes Mariametroidea as the correct name (ICZN art. 36.1). [details]
