Classification Hartman (1978) thought Helmetophorus was related to the hesionids, while Glasby & Fauchald (1991) thought it belonged in Flabelligeridae, and finally Salazar-Vallejo et al. (2007) moved it to Acrocirridae. [details]
Diagnosis Emended diagnosis by Salazar-Vallejo et al. (2007: 473): ''Body cylindrical, tapering posteriorly. Cephalic hood dorsally elongate, truncate ventrally. Body papillae reduced; interparapodial papillae elongate, clavate. All chaetae simple, straight, outer chaetal cortex with successive bands of denticles. Nuchal organs convoluted. Branchiae cirriform. Nephridial lobes lateral. Perhaps pelagic forms.'' [details]
Etymology The generic name Helmetophorus is composed by the English word 'helmet' and the New Latin suffix of Greek origin -phorus, meaning 'bearing', and refers to the helmetlike hood covering the anterior end of the worm. [details]
