Nomenclature Malmgren (1867:101) used Ammocharidae for the two genera Ammochares (a record of Ammochares assimilis Sars) and his new genus Myriochele (Myriochele heeri n. sp.). He does not diagnose the family or discuss it and makes no mention of Owenia, later to be the senior synonym of Ammochares. Rouse & Pleijel (2001:187) state that Ammochares "was incorrectly used .. to erect Ammocharidae", but don't explain why they assert that. The eventual Oweniidae of Rioja was not created until 1917, and it appears to be an unnecessary replacement name, as under Art. 40.1 a family name is not affected by synonymy of its type genus. However, Oweniidae is maintained as it now has prevailing usage (Art. 40.2). More recently Ibrahim, Villalobos-Guerrero & Idris (2024: 516) state that Oweniidae and Ammocharidae are a nomen protectum and nomen oblitum pair but this designation is not correct. A nomen oblitum (articles 23.9.1 & 23.9.2) must not have been used after 1899, but they record that Berkeley (1931) still used Ammocharidae. Therefore Ammocharidae is not a nomen oblitum. Straightforward Article 40.2 regarding family names replaced before 1961 applies here, and is why Oweniidae can continue to be used. [details]
