Taxonomy Both Quatrefages (1866) and Ehlers (1868) appear to have recognised that Lumbriconereis unicornis Grube matched Schmarda's (1861) genus Nematonereis and possibly his species N. unicornis (both Grube and Schmarda choosing the same epithet by the obvious character state present). Quatrefages (1866) put Nematonereis in Lumbrineridae, whereas Grube put it in Eunicidae, where it remains, and retained N. unicornis (Grube), placing N. grubei, Quatrefages' unnecessary replacement name for it, as its synonym.
