Etymology "Escarpia southwardae in honour of E. Southward (University of Plymouth, Plymouth, UK), who has devoted her long career to the study of tubeworms." [details]
Type designation No holotype or syntypes were designated, only paratypes, therefore Escarpia southwardae is an unavailable name if ICZN code is interpreted strictly (ICZN Ed.4, Art. 72.3, etc). However, while authors mistakenly used the word "paratypes" [by definition the remaining types after holotype designation] for what are effectively syntypes, the type series was clearly indicated (fixed) in the paper. If these "paratype" specimens are treated as syntypes the name can therefore be considered available from its original publication. (ICZN list members discussed this problem in October 2011, under the subject "Paratypes but no holotype", and the consensus was as stated above.) [details]
