Nomenclature Usually treated as a junior homonym, arising from a long standing treatment as the original name of a nereidid (eg in Quatrefages, 1866) but this is not correct. Delle Chiaje appears not to be creating a new name. He was aware of Spio caudatus Lamarck and is here applying the name, although misidentified to a nereidid. Spio caudatus is mentioned on p.426, but this is in the context of Polydora cornuta and Lamarck's Spio caudatus unnecessary replacement name. Then on p. 432-433 it is mentioned in the caption for plate 28, fig. 10 & 15, and is clearly a nereidid. This is a misidentification and Spio caudatus Delle Chiaje, 1827 cannot be used as an available name (Art.49). The many past usages (e.g., a modern usage in Nunez p.352, as Neanthes caudata (Delle Chiaje, 1827) in Vieitez et al. (2004)) have not been valid. Neanthes acuminata is the next available name (see note on nomenclature of Spio caudatus Lamarck) [G. Read original analysis, Jan 2016]

Publication date Quatrefages (1866:551) is evidently the source for Hartman's (1959:390) catalogue record date of 1828 (she uses "in Quatrefages", her standard method of indicating secondhand information). Actually Quatrefages gives no date, but reports the publication details as Delle Chiaje's 'memorie' (vol. 2, pl. 28, fig. 10 & 15 [date 1827, plates dated 1822 but possibly 1830]) and 'animali senza vetebre' (pl. 102, fig. 10 & 15 [date 1841]) [a reprint of the first publication of the plates]. [details]
