Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet tricuspis is a Latin adjective meaning 'tricuspid' or 'having three points', and presumably refers to the pygidium of the species, which is described and pictured as having three anal cirri, two lateral, and one shorter unpaired median cirrus: "Zwei seitlich abstehende und ein kurzer unpaariger Aftercirrus (Taf. VII. Fig. 20)" (Müller, 1858: 216; see also plate VII fig. 20). [details]

Taxonomy Salazar-Vallejo (1990) redescribed Hermundura tricuspis as Parandalia tricuspis, and designated a neotype. [details]
