Etymology Not stated, uncertain. The specific epithet syrtis is a Latin noun meaning 'sandbank', and refers presumably to the habitat where the species was originally collected, a shallow water sandbank of fine sand, at Otago Harbour. Again, as in the case of sister species Paraboccardia acus, the epithet can be treated as an unchanging noun in apposition [details]
Habitat Fine sand just below low water spring tide, in recorded densities of up to 950/m2, forming flexible brown tubes oriented vertically, in the top 5-10 cm. [details]
Type locality South Pacific Ocean, New Zealand, South Island, Otago Harbour, sandbank to SE of Quarantine Island (geocoordinates not provided, estimated with gazetteer to be approximately lat. -45.833º, long. 170.637º), 1 m depth. [details]
