Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Day (1963: 415): ''Small Oribiniidae belonging to the sub-family Protoariciinae with two achaetous segments following the prostomium. Thoracic region with few segments. Thoracic setae are crenulate capillaries in both rami. Abdominal region with both notopodial and neuropodial lobes bearing capillary seta. No specialised setae. Branchiae restricted to the abdominal segments.''

Etymology Not stated. The generic epithet Scoloplella seems to be composed by the name of the genus Scoloplos Blainville, 1828, followed by the Latin suffix -ella (masculine: -ellus), which is added to a noun to form a diminuitive of that noun, and presumably makes reference to the small size of the type species of the new genus.
