Identification Numerous subspecific taxa were described, which differ usually by slightly different dimensions and morphology of akinetes (e. g., absence or modification of striated exospore, etc.) and their relation to the typical C. stagnale must be checked: var. angustum Smith 1916, f. tortuosum Elenkin et Kosinskaja in Elenkin 1938, f. sporolimbata Frémy 1942, var. tennis Seckt 1922, var. minus Kamat 1961, var. australe Playfair 1918, var. garhwalensis Gupta et Nair 1963 and others (Fig. 1130).

Description Mats submersed, macroscopic, amorphous, mucilaginous, blue-green, greyish or brownish green, attached to submersed substrates, mostly water-plants, later coming free and flowing near the water surface. Trichomes flexuous, distinctly constricted at the cross-walls. Cells cylindrical, isodiametric or up to 2 x longer than wide, pale to bright blue-green, (3) 3.8-45 (6?) μm wide; apical cells cylindrical-rounded. Heterocytes rarely almost spherical, usually oval, ovoid, or cylindrical with rounded ends, 7-16 x (4.5) 6-7 μm. Akinetes solitary, cylindrical or cylindrical-oval, rounded at the ends, 32-40 x 10-46 μm, with smooth, yellow-brown exospore, which is sometimes only slightly widened, but usually indistinctly radially striated.  [details]
