Authority Attributed to Lesson by L. Agassiz (1841: p. 110), who never appears to have actually published the name, and thus Agassiz's use is the first to make the name validly available. Agassiz is, therefore, the correct author according to the Code. [details]

Description Colour in life: background off-white with pale purplish brown blotches, dark pigment surrounding mouth and anus (Humphreys, 1981).
Also distributed in Marshall Islands, New Caledonia (Clark, 1954); Maldive area, Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan and South Pacific Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
General distribution: from the Red Sea to Polynesia (Tortonese, 1980); tropical, Indo-west Pacific Ocean, depth range 0-85 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
Ecology: benthic, inshore, continental shelf, deposit feeder (Rowe & Gates, 1995). [details]
