| Note | |
In the Systema Porifera the class Demospongiae was subdivided in three subclasses, Tetractinomorpha, Ceractinomorpha and Homoscleromorpha. Current insights are that the subclasses Tetractinomorpha and Ceractinomorpha overlap in many characters, are clearly paraphyletic and must be abandoned and replaced by different new assemblages. Names for groups of orders have been erected in recent papers based on molecular analyses, e.g. the old name Keratosa for a combination of Dictyoceratida and Dendroceratida, the name Tetractinellida for the combination of Spirophorida and Astrophorida (and some of the Lithistida), Verongimorpha Erpenbeck et al. 2012 for a combination of Verongida and Chondrosida including Halisarcida(e), Haploscleromorpha for the marine Haplosclerida, and Democlavia or 'G4' for the remaining orders. Until these combinations have been confirmed by forthcoming studies and until a comprehensive subclass classification has been established, we will continue using here the Systema Porifera orders as the units below the class level (May 2012). However, the former subclass Homoscleromorpha is transferred to a class of its own and is no longer considered part of the Demospongiae (January 2012). [details]
