Classification Iphionidae as an independent family was created by Kinberg (1856), although Pettibone (considered to be incorrect here) preferred Baird as the author. Pettibone (1986) gives a detailed history of Iphionidae/Iphioninae and its relation to Polynoidae. She has Horst (1917) as the first to use Iphioninae wtihin Polynoidae, a rank and classification she followed. [details]Editor's comment In nomenclature Iphioninae is the same name as Iphionidae, with the different suffix indicating the rank within family-group names at which it is being used. Strictly 'Iphioninae' does not require a separate entry in WoRMS as it is currently disused. However, we have included a separate entry to enable users encountering historic usages as 'Iphioninae' to find the current valid rank and spelling as 'Iphionidae' [details]
