Until now, the authorship of Orchestia tumida has been attributed to Thomson (1885). Thomson’s work does not meet the requirements of Articles 13.1 and 13.3 of the Code for availability of this name, therefore it is considered a nomen nudum. Stebbing (1886) is the preliminary publication of the species which was read to the Zoological Society of London. It was not until Stebbing (1887) that the species was formally described and illustrated based on material sent to Stebbing by Thomson. In subsequent work, Thomson (1889) referred to Stebbing’s (1887) full description and provides some figures of the female.
