From editor or global species database
Alien species The planthopper Prokelisia marginata originally only occurred on smooth cord-grass Spartina alterniflora along the east coast of the United States. It first appeared in Europe in 1994 when it was reported from the Portugese Algarve region. The species presumably reached Belgium in 2010, although it escaped notice until august 2011. This planthopper was probably introduced into Europe together with cord-grass leaves used for packaging. Prokelisia marginata occurs exclusively on cord-grass species Spartina and feeds on their phloem sap. This planthopper was introduced to the American west coast (Washington State) as a biological control agent of the exotic cord-grass species. [details]From regional or thematic species database
