Editor's comment McIntosh (1885: 29-30) does not provide information about the depth, habitat, or date of collection of Eurythoe pacifica levukaensis. The H.M.S. Challenger arrived to Lekuva on the 28th July 1874. According to the travelogue written by W.J.J. Spry "The Cruise of Her Majesty's Ship "Challenger". Voyages Over Many Seas, Scenes in Many Lands" (1878: 190), "On the 28th [July 1874], we were off the harbour [of Levuka], which is surrounded with detached coral reefs, over which the surf was breaking in white foam: passing through an opening only 800 or 900 feet wide, we reached the anchorage, with its shallow, clear, and still water, affording as great a contrast as possible to the dark turbulent waves outside." Moreover, J. Murray & A.F. Renard refer on the "Report on the Deep Sea Deposits Based on the Specimens Collected During the Voyage" (1891: 167) that "In the Coral Sand from 12 fathoms [= about 22 m], off Levuka, there were no pelagic Foraminifera, while the minerals were comparatively numerous and large, having a mean diameter of 0.5 mm." The collections of the NHMUK hold several specimens of Mollusca collected during the Challenger Expedition at Levuka, the 29th July 1874, at a depth of 22 m deep, which seems to fit the data of the sample of sediment described by Murray and Renard. It is possible that the specimens of Eurythoe pacifica levukaensis are from the same sample. [details]
