The species was first synonymized with Haplosyllis spongicola (Grube, 1855) by Willey (1905: 269), and posteriorly with H. djiboutiensis Gravier, 1900 by Augener (1913: 213). Lattig & Martin (2009) regarded the species as being similar to H. uncinigera (Grube, 1878) in some aspects, but in the absence of type material considered it to be incertae sedis. [details]
