Nomenclature This name was in general use until the 1970s for the species now known as Patella ulyssiponensis (Gmelin, 1791) following Christiaens (1973) who revived the older name. This is why there are many records which should be assigned to P. ulyssiponensis. Currently the name Patella aspera Röding, 1798 (in part based on the same type specimen) is used for the Macaronesian populations considered (Weber & Hawkins, 2005), as distinct from Patella ulyssiponensis Gmelin, 1791 [details]
