Taxonomy: Clark & Downey (1992) distinguish two subspecies: L. muelleri muelleri has stouter arms and longer spines and occurs from Norway to the Shetlands; L. muelleri celtica has slightly tapering arms, shorter and rougher spines, and has been found in eastern Scotland and Northern Ireland. [details]
