The genus Capitella Blainville, 1828 is emended. Capitomastus Eisig, 1887 and Capitellides Mesnil, 1897 are reduced to synonyms of Capitella. These genera has been distinguished on the number of thoracic segments, which is difficult to determine because the peristomium is indistinct; on the thoracic chaetal formula, which is shown to be very variable; and on the presence of genital hooks in female worms, which is considered invalid because of the possibility of hermaphroditism
