Nomenclature This combination was generally assumed to be for Mycale modesta sensu Babic, 1923 (not Schmidt, 1862 as Babic intended)....
Nomenclature This combination was generally assumed to be for Mycale modesta sensu Babic, 1923 (not Schmidt, 1862 as Babic intended). However, De Laubenfels' sentences on p. 120 where the new name was erected are mixed up and not clearly interpretable as they have been printed. De Laubenfels left a few typed pages of errata in his copy that is kept in the library of the National Natural History Museum in Washington. In these errata De Laubenfels said that two lines (starting at 183 mm from the top of p. 120) have been printed in the wrong order. If that indication is implemented, the adapted text reads:
...[because modesta was already employed in Esperella/Esperia by Schmidt (1862, p. 57) a new name is needed for that of Lambe, for which I therefore propose babici; the name has since been used a third time in the genus by Babic (1922, p. 267) and a new name will be necessary for Babic' species]....
This means that the name for the Alaskan species Esperella modesta sensu Lambe is changed to M.(C.) babici (De Laubenfels, 1936), leaving Babic' record of Mycale modesta conspecific with Schmidt's as a junior synonym of Mycale (Aegogropila) contarenii (or as it is likely a misidentification by Babic, a synonym of M. (A.).rotalis). [details]
