The name of the genus seems to be composed by the prefix of Greek origin hespero-, referring to the 'west', and the latinized word of Greek origin phyllum, also used to form the name of the family Phyllodocidae and referring to the dorsal leaflike cirri typical of the group, presumably referring to the westerly origin of the type species of the new genus, Hesperophyllum tectum Chamberlin, 1919, described from the western coast of the USA, and its morphological similarity with the genera Notophyllum Örsted, 1843 and Austrophyllum Bergström, 1914.  [details]

Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Chamberlin (1919: 4) "Similar in general to Notophyllum and Austrophyllum but differing especially in having the ventral cirrus of the second segment flattened and foliaceous and strongly asymmetrical. It is like Notophyllum and unlike Austrophyllum in having the first segment dorsally reduced." [details]
