[English summary:]
The Authors redescribe
Poecilochaetus fulgoris Claparède,
Poecilochaetus bermudensis Hartman and
Poecilochaetus johnstoni Hartman filling some gaps of the original descriptions. They consider valid the
species A Gallardo 1967 naming it
Poecilochaetus gallardoi n. sp.
They describe too a new species of the same genus:
Poecilochaetus fauchaldi n. sp. found in the coastal waters of eastern Sicily.
Poecilochaetus fauchaldi n. sp. lacks gills; has the sensorial parapodial organ in the first 5 setigers only; the median lobe of the nuchal organ reaches as far as the 3
rd-4
th setiger, its lateral lobes are very short;
Poecilochaetus fauchaldi has neuropodial hooks in the 2
nd and 3
rd setigers; ear-like bristles from the 2
nd setiger backwards and feathered bristles from the 16
th-19
th setiger backwards. In the caudal setigers, smooth acicular setae and notopodial "alpenstock-shaped" setae are present. The cirri of the 7
th-13
th setigers are flask shaped.
The Authors put out a critical analysis of the main characters of the Poecilochaetidae (particularly of the genus
Poecilochaetus) and recognize as many groups of species as phyletic lines according to the evolution within the group. They give also a dichotomic key to identify all the species of the family and comparative tables to make the comparison among different species easier.
