The study of new specimens from the Californian coast and comparison with the syntype from The Natural History Museum London showed that Tethya aurantia var. californiana de Laubenfels, 1932 is a valid species, to be named T. californiana de Laubenfels, clearly distinct in anatomical and spicular characters from T. aurantium (Pallas, 1766). The special cortical structure and the highly specialized aquiferous system of this species are described, together with its skeleton and spicules.
