Etymology Not stated by the author. The specific epithet onychophora is derived from the Ancient Greek and means "bearing or having claws" (onycho = 'claws' or 'nails'; phora = 'bearing'), referring clearly to the shape of the notopodial chaetae in the atokous anterior region of the holotype: "I met with a male Heteronereis, that is characterized by having in the anterior (agamous) body-region, the notopodial fascicle represented by a single, stout, yellow bristle, with a dark brown, hook-shaped apex" (Horst, 1918: 248).
