Taxonomic remark The genus Eumedusa is difficult to separate from Calycopsis. It was formerly distinguished from it by the presence of two types of tentacles, but also some species kept traditionally in Calycopsis have this trait (C. nematophora, C. bigelowi). Remaining possible diagnostic traits are the nematocysts covering the whole tentacle, the manubrium size, and the structure of the gonads. The status of Eumedusa can only be evaluated further once a reliable molecular phylogeny of the Calycopsidae is available [details]
