The sponge partner in a little-known halichondrid sponge-hermit crab association, located in the northeast corner of the Gulf of Mexico, has been identified, and compared with sponges in similar associations from the western Atlantic and other locations. Examination of new material coupled with ecological information has resulted in a redescriplion of Spongosorites suberitoides, originally described from North Carolina and Venezuela. The systematic position and evolutionary convergence of association with hermit crabs in suberitid and halichondrid sponges is discussed.
