Taxonomy Lamarck (1818) gives a description only of the tube (attached to hard surfaces), and acknowledges the species name is copied from Savigny's MSS. However, Savigny's 'Description de l'Egypte' plate (publication date unverified - text is 1822) appears to give a good indication of the morphology of the species to which he gave a name. McIntosh (1915) later makes several mentions of the "Clymene amphistoma" usages of earlier authors, for example p.306, "It is difficult to say what the Clymene amphistoma of Delle Chiaje is ...", and on p.293 McIntosh includes Grube's concept of C. amphistoma as a species with anal cirri and "With twenty-three bristled segments and three ante-anal".
