Taxonomy Lamarck (1818: 356) does not mention the Gmelin in Linnaeus source of the name, but his synonymy shows the name is based on the pre-Linnaean name Corallina tubularia melitensis Ellis, and Sabella penicillus of Linnaeus. Thus Lamarck's usage can be regarded as a synonym of Sabella spallanzanii Gmelin, according to the treatment of Knight-Jones & Perkins (1998) [details]
