Etymology The name of the genus Ancistrosyllis is composed by the word ancistrus, derived from the Ancient Greek agkistron and meaning 'hook', making reference to the "single large and characteristic hook" placed above the parapodial dorsal cirri, and the name of the genus Syllis Savigny in Lamarck, 1818, the type of the family Syllidae to which the new species was "apparently allied" (McIntosh, 1879: 502).
