Taxonomy This was erected as a replacement name for Chalina oculata var. novaezelandiae Dendy, 1924 from northern New Zealand, which is a junior synonym of Callyspongia (Callyspongia) serpentina (Lamarck, 1814) according to Hooper & Bergquist, 1994: 102. Burton (1929) is unclear about the reasons for this replacement name, but it is unlikely that his material is conspecific with C. serpentina, so we accept dendyi as a separate species in the genus Callyspongia. To complicate matters, this combination is a senior secondary homonym of Callyspongia (Toxochalina) dendyi (Burton, 1931) (as Toxochalina). [details]
