Specimen The Leiden Museum incorporates a small collection of Lamarck specimens ('duplicates'), which were donated by the Paris Museum in 1815 as part compensation for lost Dutch natural history objects sequestered during the French occupation of Holland (1795-1813). Among these there are specimens labeled Spongia pannea 'Mers d'Amérique', which are considered part of the type series, and in the absence of any material in the Paris Museum, this contains the lectotype. The locality from which the specimen was collected remains uncertain as Topsent (1932: 115) reports that specimens he identified in plates III-V of Guettard (1783) identified by him as Euspongia offcinalis var usitatissima (Lamarck, 1814) are from the Mediterranean. Type locality American Seas, but see Topsent (1932: 115). [details]
