Identification In the absence of a type specimen there is no real evidence that Alcyonium bursa Linnaeus, 1758 is what has been described by Vosmaer (1885) as Weberella bursa. Müller (1806) subsequently pictured a specimen from Norway that could be conspecific with Vosmaer's species, but that specimen has also not been retrieved and its description lacks details that make it likely the two are the same. Taxonomic remark According to INA, Alcyonium bursa Linnaeus is "...traditionally cited as basionym of Codium bursa, but is invalid in botanical nomenclature; cites "Ellis corall. 82. n. 1. t. 17. f. B, C, D. Alcyonium pulmonis instar lobatum." = Synoicum pulmonaria (Ellis & Solander 1786) [details]
