Additional information The status of this variety needs to be checked. Clathrina blanca var. bathybia was described as Leucosolenia blanca var. bathybia by Poléjaeff (1883) from the analysis of two specimens from the Azores collected at a depth of about 822 m (450 fathoms). Due to its morphological similarity, it is possible that it is Clathrina blanca (Miklucho-Maclay, 1868), a species originally described from the Canary Islands. However, the possibility of being a new species cannot be disregarded.
In 1930, Burton synonymized this species with Clathrina macleayi (Lendenfeld, 1885), a species from the east coast of Australia (Port Jackson). Poléjaeff's (1883) description is far from complete, leaving many doubts. Therefore, it is not possible to know for sure who Clathrina blanca var. bathybia is. However, if it is not a distinct species, it would be much more likely to be C. blanca, a species from the Atlantic, than C. macleayi, a species from Australia. For the time being, we think it is better to leave this variety of C. blanca as valid, until an analysis of the specimens of the referred species is carried out. [details]
