A review and redefinition of descriptive terminology and specific diagnostic characters in the genus Tethya has allowed an evaluation of the status of Tethya and construction of a descriptive framework through which new species can be recognised. Descriptions of eleven new species of Tethya from New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia are given in conjunction with redescriptions of Tethya aurantium, T. seychellensis and T. robusta. Suggestions for a new approach to the systematics of Tethya are put forward.
