Kinetic and morphological aspects of particle ingestion by the freshwater sponge Ephydatia fluviatilis L. In: D. C. Smith and Y. Tiffon (Eds.). "Nutrition in the Lower Metazoa". Pergamon Press, Oxford and New York, pp. 163-178.
The transit of particles during nutrition of the freshwater sponge Ephydatia
fluviatilis has been studied by feeding sponges with calibrated polystyrene latex
beads [Diam. 0, 794 ?m). Beads have been added to the culture medium. After
incubation times spreading from 5 minutes to 12 hours. sponges have been fixed
for further ultrastructural studies. The results show that not only choanocytes
and archaeocytes, but also pinacocytes manifest a phagocytic activity.
