Nomenclature The name was erected by Pallas (1774) in a chapter where he cited Gaertner (1774) as the author (?). Curiously he cited Gaertner's name for this species (Distomus variolosus) as an 'alternative' for the present name. This has caused confusion among contemporary authors, with Gmelin in Linnaeus (1791: 3816) citing both names under the present combination as valid, whereas Lamarck (1816 (vol.3): 101) choosing the opposite course. Gaertner's manuscript name Distomus variolosus cited by Pallas was interpreted from Lamarck onwards as the correct name, with Alcyonium ascidioides as an unnecessary objective junior synonym.  [details]
