Classification The publication Müller (1806) appeared long after Müller's death, edited and illustrated by his successors. The present Spongia species is not recognized or discussed by contemporaneous and later authors, the description is unclear whether it concerns a sponge or an ascidian, and the figure provided in pl. CLVII fig. 4 does not match the description very well. No type material is known to exist. The species is thus incertae sedis. [details]
