Kennouche, H.; Benabdi, M.; SantÃn, A. (2026) Moving eastwards: first occurrence of the range-expanding Haliclona (Chalinula) nigra (Boury-Esnault & Lopes, 1985) (Porifera; Demospongiae) in Algerian waters, a case of tropicalization? Cahiers de Biologie Marine, 67, 83-88
The Mediterranean is the sea with the largest number of reported non-indigenous, range-expanding and cryptogenic species, yet few of those are sponges. Amongst those is Haliclona (Chalinula) nigra Boury- Esnault & Lopes, 1985, an Azorean species that was first reported for the Mediterranean Sea less than 10 years ago. This article highlights the first record of the species in Algerian waters, and specifically in the waters of the Rachgoun Nature Reserve, where it occupies vast areas. This observation corroborates the expansion of the species towards the east of the Alboran Sea, while also marking its easternmost point to date in the Mediterranean, supporting previous signs of H. (C.) nigra being range expanding in the basin, which could be related to the tropicalization of both Mediterranean and East Atlantic waters.
