Classification The parent taxon of the genus is assigned by the authors to 'Haplosclerida incertae sedis', so for the time being we class the genus outside one of the five families of that order until more clarity is obtained about family classification of the order Haplosclerida. [details]
Validity This ‘genus’ was originally erected in 2017 under the rules of the Phylocode, which does not recognize ranks or type species. The ‘definition’ of Arenospicula is quoted from the original paper: ‘(nomen cladi novum, stem-based) The most inclusive clade containing Arenosclera brasiliensis Muricy & Ribeiro, 1999, A. amazonensis Leal et al., 2017, and A. klausi Leal et al., 2017’. The ‘genus’ name is here considered unavailable. Phylocode and Linnean classifications show fundamental differences. The WPD and WoRMS have committed themselves to the latter. Since then, however, the authors (2025) have adapted the description of the genus to conform to the Code of the ICZN, and the genus name is now available and is accepted dated 2025 (in stead of 2017).
