Homonymy This is a senior primary homonym of Spongia linteiformis Lamarck, 1814. Although Lamarck mentioned the Esper name with a question mark he assigned his specimen from Puerto Rico to it, while Esper gave Indian Ocean as type locality. Topsent (1933) redescribed and illustrated Lamarck's material and this made it clear it differs substantially from Esper's plate and description. Lamarck's material has been renamed Scalarispongia lamarcki Van Soest, 2024 (q.v.). [details]
